The diversity in landscape lends itself to a cornucopia of activities for kids from tikes to teens. With endorsements flowing in from parents who either live in or have visited the area, we’ve composed the superlatives of the region based on the votes from you, our wonderful Trekaroo families!
- Best Place for Kids in the Piedmont
- Best Science Museum for Kids
- Best Playground
- Best Amusement Park
- Best Thrill-seeking Fun
- Best Outdoor Attraction for Kids
- Best Free Attraction for Families
#1 Rated Place for kids in the Piedmont and Best place for kids to see the Animal Kingdom: North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro

The North Carolina Zoo is by far the most popular Piedmont destination on Trekaroo, with nearly twice the votes as the next most popular activity! With over 1100 animals, the NC Zoo boasts an amazing diversity of animals separated by geographical habitats, so there is something for every kind of animal lover. KMCole says, “ My son prefers North America, because he loves Alligators and Turtles. My daughter prefers Africa, because she loves the elephants.” As for the exhibits, many families share christinembyrd’s sentiment that the “zoo has worked very hard to make the animals’ areas as close to their natural habitat as possible.” This also means large exhibit areas that are very spaced out, which leads to the nearly unanimous caution to wear your walking boots and bring a stroller!

Best Science Museum for Kids: Museum of Life and Science in Durham
Lilkidthings says the Museum of Life and Science is “all about the outdoors.” The museum combines interactive exhibits and places to get close to wildlife, like the butterfly and insect house. For the renaissance child, this museum may have almost too many possibilities: train rides, space exhibit, playgrounds (outdoor and indoor), and a dinosaur trail. Even children still learning to say Tyrannosaurus Rex will find reason to smile in this educational fun zone. TedsMom said, “We have already taken our one-year old son here twice because he had so much fun!” As TedsMom said, kids will enjoy going back again and again.

Best Playground: Dan Nicholas Park and Campground in Salisbury

From searching for gems to a train ride on the Spencer Moose express, the Dan Nicholas Park is a playground’s playground. “They have the most playground equipment I have seen since I was young,” says KMCole. There is no dearth of activity at Dan Nicholas Park. Mayasmom says her daughter “loved the animals and the putt putt course.” All of this fun comes reasonably priced, too. Carolinamama and her two kids had a blast for just one Andrew Jackson. “Three hours of fun for $20 is pretty good!” Trekaroo parents have unanimously given Dan Nicholas Park a five-star rating, which makes this a must-play destination when visiting the Piedmont Triangle.

The Best Amusement Park for Kids: Carowinds in Charlotte
Carowinds is the largest and highest rated amusement park by Trekaroo parents in the Piedmont Triangle. The rides are as high as the reviews, making Carowinds a thrill seekers destination. Even for those who don’t love a zip and zoom through the air, there is still plenty of fun to be had. Krisco32 says, “The roller coasters are awesome, and little kids will love the Nick theme and characters.” Some parents caution, though, that the park is geared towards older kids. However, as jpocock says, “The waterpark is fun for all!” As with most amusement parks, Carowinds can be a bit pricey, but there is definitely something special about this park.

Best Thrill-seeking Fun: NASCAR SpeedPark in Concord

M&M sponsored cars aren’t the only reason kids are fans of NASCAR. Putting the pedal to the metal to cross the finish line is enough to get anyone’s heart pumping, especially the aspiring professional driver. While nobody is hitting 200 mph at the NASCAR SpeedPark, the five, twisty kart tracks will keep your kids entertained for hours. Trekaroo parent bukosker says that there is plenty of fun to satisfy all ages, including adults, with activities like laser tag, mini-golf, and kiddie rides. Many trekaroo moms use NASCAR SpeedPark as a daddy-run daycare, like cinnamonsugah, “My husband took the kids here while I shopped at Concord Mills Mall.” Tracie4 concurs that the “park is in a great location.”

Best Outdoor Attraction to Visit with Kids: Hanging Rock State Park in Danbury

Nature is the imagination’s favorite playground and Hanging Rock State Park is one of the best play structures. Trekaroo parent asenic waxes nostalgic about this park: “I have such fond memories of going to Hanging Rock with my dad. I love the sandy beach they have to offer, the beautiful walking trails, waterfalls and scenic views.” There is a network of trails with varying lengths to accommodate the varying sizes of legs doing the trekking. TMNbecky suggest the “shorter, easier trail to the waterfall,” rather than the scenic trail to the top of the mountain for those traveling with kids. After the hike, kids will enjoy a dip in the lake. “The beach is worth the couple of dollars and perfect for the little ones in your group,” mentions kikismom. No matter what path you take at Hanging Rock, your kids will be amazed at the sheer cliffs and waterfalls they see. And on those hot summer days, they’ll enjoy a good splash in the cool mountain lake.

Best FREE Attraction for Families: North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh

Dessia’s two girls loved their visit to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. They really enjoyed “the room they get to dress up like all sorts of animals and insects.” With four floors of exciting adventures to be found, there is plenty of space for excitement. “From dinosaurs to sea life to bugs, its an adventure from start to finish,” says kitkat324. For families with ages and tastes as different as dinosaurs and butterflies, have no fear! Familiarycerz’s four children ranging from 3-10, rarely find a compromise on museums, but the NC Museum of Natural Sciences was a big hit for all. With all the praise Trekaroo parents give to this museum, perhaps the most amazing part about it is that it’s FREE!

With Thanksgiving marking the start of the holidays, did you think that we folks at Trekaroo would be kicking back and working on our holiday travels? As the Obamas get ready to light up the Christmas tree in DC on Thursday, we’re lighting up DC on the Trekaroo map today!

Capitol Fun for Families. Credit: Flickr/ac1982
Why DC? Well, I always remember the first time that I came here with my parents and younger sister. I didn’t get to meet the President, but being inside the White House and Capitol Hill was like having my history class come to life. I remember being totally bummed because we kept getting lost in our search for the Supreme Court. Although, DC proper is only about 8 miles wide, the region stretches into the outer edges of Maryland and Virginia. With over 100 activities for kids of all ages to enjoy, Trekaroo brings you the District of Columbia – unplugged for kids.
So, what have we got?
- Over 100 Activities for kids in the Washington DC Metro Area
- Over 150 hotels in and around Washington DC that are waiting to be rated by families like you.
Here’s a summary of what the Trekaroo community’s is saying:
- Best Activiites for Kids in Washington DC – voted by parents
- Top Kid-friendly Hotels in Washington DC - voted by parents
Great lists created by the Trekaroo community:
- The Best Kid-friendly Hiking Trails in DC – HikingAlong

All of these lists have been contributed by DC area mom bloggers for our Trekaroo KidsMobile stop in DC today. KidsMobile is making a virtual tour of the US with local bloggers jumping on and off.
A special shout-out goes to Max’s Mom, jenc17, carolr, momof4girls, katy, and girlymama for their love of Washington DC and helping us build up DC’s content from the ground-up for this launch. Without them or my com padres at Trekaroo, we’d only be covering the Bay Area. Thank you, thank you, thank you times a million.
See you at a monument,
Esther Lee (thelees3) – CEO
P.S. To kick-off the new year, we’ve got a full line-up of new states to launch including Colorado, Utah, and North Carolina. If you’d like to help us get any of these states or your local area ready for lift-off, please email us at editor@trekaroo.com.

Travel with kids to: CA | FL | HI | MA | NY | PA | TX | VA and now IL and WA and DC
Washington D.C. holds a special place in the hearts and imaginations of both young and old. The city spills over with historical adventures and political fervor. The international nature of the city offers exciting opportunities for discovering new food and fun that your kid’s have never experienced before. Beyond the numerous options for enjoyment, the greatness of this destination is that many of the activities are free! Multiply that by the number of people in your family and it’s now Fabulously Free.
To help you navigate the many choices any visiting family faces in Washington D.C., we’ve compiled a list of hot spots based on what the Trekaroo community’s been saying.
#1 Place to take Kids: Leave the political zoo for some real monkey business at the National Zoo
Washington D.C.’s most popular attractions among Trekaroo families, the National Zoo is also the best value in the capital with no charge for admission. The zoo is easily accessible by the metro, which will add to the adventure for the kids and avoid expensive parking fees. At the zoo you’ll be captivated by the two most prominent residents: gorillas and pandas. If reptiles are more your child’s animal of choice, then don’t miss the komodo dragons.
Best Museum - Prehistoric Imagining at the National Museum of Natural History
While the National Zoo is a great place to get your fill of the animal kingdom, there’s nothing quite like the colossal dinosaurs at the Museum of Natural History. You don’t have to be an aspiring paleontologist to appreciate the Museum of Natural History. The museum is much more than dinosaur fossils. You just may find your T-rex obsessed five year old finding a new interest in the deep water world found in the new Global Ocean Systems undersea exhibit.
Best View in Town - Soar into the DC sky at the Washington Monument
Any visit to the nation’s capital must include a tour through the monuments. Washington D.C.’s most prominent and possibly the most interesting for youngsters is the Washington Monument, which takes you nearly 500 feet in the air for a spectacular view of the city. The lines can be long, so arrive early or purchase tickets in advance for a small fee. While you’re there, don’t forget to walk by the nearby reflecting pond en route to Lincoln’s Memorial.
Best Neighborhood – Take a trip across the river to Old Town Alexandria, VA
One of the most interesting neighborhoods in the D.C. metro area is Old Town Alexandria. With its classic colonial architecture and abundance of unique shops and restaurants, although many of the eateries are on the pricey side. If packing a lunch is an option, sit down for a bite at one of Alexandria’s beautiful parks and enjoy the atmosphere (and the play structures). The history is not just in the edifices; the past 250 years of the area are well documented in museums scattered throughout the town. For a truly local appeal, visit the Saturday Farmer’s Market that take place every week in the morning.
Outdoor Hotspot – For a journey beyond the usual, visit Theodore Roosevelt Island
Theodore Roosevelt Island is a fitting tribute to one of the United States’ most nature-friendly presidents. Sitting in the middle of the Potomac, the island is traversed by 2.5 miles of walking trails. There is a variety of wildlife to see, such as box turtles, squirrels and snakes. The island isn’t filled with historical placards, but in the island’s center is a monument to Teddy Roosevelt. Being off the radar of most Washington D.C. visitors, the island is one of the few monuments without monumental crowds.
Hiking Heaven – Rock Creek Park is a gem
Rock Creek ranks among the best of inner city parks. There are all kinds of ways to take in the outdoor air through walking, biking, boating, or even a gallop on the back of a horse. Beyond the natural beauty and fun of Rock Creek Park, there is some human-made activity as well. The Nature Center has an area geared towards kids with many hands-on activities. After discovering the Earthly realm, stop by the planetarium for intriguing exhibits for all levels of star gazers. A great break for kids from the museum route.

Let's Play Ball. Credit: Flickr/fredosan
Favorite Sporting Event - A Washington Nationals game
Nothing says USA like Baseball. So why not catch America’s dearest sport in the Nation’s Capital? A Washington Nationals game makes for a fun day at the park, filled with hot dogs and foul balls. Sundays are a special day at the Nationals’ stadium where kids can get player’s signatures and run the bases after the game. They may even get to meet Screech the Eagle, the Nationals’ mascot.

Philadelphia most famous for being the centerpiece of American History. While Philadelphia offers many opportunities to bring history alive for kids in a fun way, there’s so much more for them to explore. Philly is filled to the brim with activities that will engage your children whether they’re 2 or 22. Here are our parent’s top picks:
Best Museum for Kids under 5 – Please Touch Museum (#1 place to take kids in Philadelphia)
If you’ve got kids under the age of 5, be sure to add the Please Touch Museum to your list. Take the location of the first World’s Fair in the US… fill it with hands-on activity centers for kids and voila… you’ve got one of the best children’s museum in this country. Favorites include shopping at the grocery store or collecting and dumping at the construction site in City Capers, building rockets and launching them in Flight Fantasy, and changing the tires at Roadside Attractions.
Best Museum for Kids over 5 – Franklin Institute
The Franklin Institute is the place to take kids in Philadelphia. The science center has more than enough to keep your kids busy for the whole day. From learning about the physics of air and flying to walking through the human heart, we were bummed when my 2 year old had to knock off to take a nap. For Love or Funny summed it up perfectly, “There are so many hands on activities, it’s hard to know where to start.”
Best Museum for Tweens and Teens – Mutter Museum
Your tweens and teens will be wide-eyed as they check out all the strange medical oddities spread throughout the Mutter Museum. “For kids who like a bit of gore, this museum is really fascinating. They’ll find jars filled with strange tumors, odd shaped skulls, and strange horns growing out of a person’s head.” (TravelPangs)
Grossest Museum in Philadelphia – Insectarium
If you’ve got kids who like to be grossed out, take them to the Insectarium. They won’t forget about all the creepy critters they see at Cockroach Kitchen and ,” the “glow-in-the-dark” scorpion, the live termite tunnel, or the tarantulas. It’s located in the Northeast section of the city, so a bit off-the-beaten path, but worth a visit if your kids like that kind of stuff.
Best Tour in Town – Ride the Ducks
The Ride the Ducks will make a trip through Philadelphia’s historical section a quacking good time with a nice 20 minute cruise around the Delaware River at the end. A fun way to enjoy Philadelphia without having to do a lot of walking.
Best Free Playspace – Smith Memorial Playground
Nestled in Fairmont Park, the Smith Memorial Playground is great for kids looking for some free outdoor fun. Here you’ll find a “40-foot-long giant slide, huge playground, and a giant 24,000 square foot playhouse! The basement has been turned into a small town – complete with stop light and parking meters, where kids can ride trikes. The playhouse is for ages 5 and under. Fun fun fun and free!!” (from girlymama)
Top Eatery for Families – Reading Terminal Market
With over 80 stands to choose from, this place is filled with food for any eater. It’s a great place for your kids to try some authentic Pennsylvania Dutch food from scrapple to whoopie pies. It can get crowded on the weekends, so be sure to hang on to your kids. Our favorite is savoring a plate of blueberry pancakes with a side of scrapple at the Dutch Eating Place for breakfast. YUM.
Must-see Historical Site to visit – Liberty Bell Center
Kids from preschoolers to high schoolers learn about the Liberty Bell. As Linda Kramer (aka minnemom) puts it, “This place has no interactive exhibits, but the fact that you’re seeing the actual Liberty Bell is impressive. Even if you’re 3. So take the kids, snap some photos by the Liberty Bell with Independence Hall in the background, and someday explain the rest of the history lesson to them. They’ll think it’s cool that they got to go there once upon a time.”
