Explore the San Antonio River Walk
A wide variety of shops, restaurants, and attractions line the scenic pathways that flank the San Antonio River as it meanders through downtown, creating a beautiful urban experience known as the San Antonio River Walk.
There always seems to be sort of festival or arts and crafts show going on during the weekends, including children’s festivals. During the holiday season, the River Walk is illuminated with festive lights and decorations, and the season is celebrated with the Ford Holiday River Parade.

A fun way to experience the river is on a guided boat tour. 35 minute tours take passengers on a 2.5-mile cruise down the San Antonio River while guides share the history of the river and surrounding area.
Dining options range from locally owned eateries such as La Margarita’s (the first restaurant to serve fajitas in the US) to boisterous chain restaurants like Dick’s Last Resort. There are lots of restaurants serving Tex-Mex, the local spin on Mexican food that you definitely want to try.

Head Up River to the Pearl District
Further up the San Antonio River along the Riverwalk extension is Pearl District San Antonio. This hip neighborhood is centered around the site of the historic Pearl Brewery, which operated from the late 1800s until the 2000s. The brewery’s buildings have been repurposed, and the area now features shops, restaurants, and event spaces.
One of the most popular Farmers Markets in San Antonio, Pearl Farmers Market, takes place on weekends. Here, local vendors sell fresh produce, artisanal goods, and handmade crafts. The Pullman Market is opening in the spring of 2024 and will be the largest culinary market in the Southwest!
On Saturdays and Sundays, rent a kayak from Mission Adventure Tours and paddle along a 3.5-mile stretch in the Pearl District.

Remember the Alamo
The Alamo is located within walking distance of the River Walk and while younger children may not understand the historical significance, it would be a shame to visit San Antonio without at least taking pictures of the kids out front.
The tour of the Alamo includes a walk through the remaining buildings and beautiful grounds, several rotating exhibits, a very well-done movie on the history of the Alamo, and a living history exhibit.
Without a doubt, the highlight of the mission for the kids is the living history exhibit in the back courtyard. There are people dressed as soldiers, cooks, doctors and even gamblers who happily speak about their craft and show off their tools.
Children over age 10 will appreciate the history and significance of the site, especially the tales and relics of the epic battle that occurred on these grounds. Activity books are available in the gift shop which are designed to engage younger children while visiting this, the sacred shrine of Texas.

Splash and be Splashed at SeaWorld
It can get hot in San Antonio, especially in the summer, so why not visit SeaWorld San Antonio, a place where sea life is celebrated through interesting exhibits, spectacular shows starring a variety of ocean mammals, and water rides that keep visitors cooled off in between?
Older children will love roller coasters with aquatic themed names such as the Steel Eel and the Great White, while little ones will love the Sesame Street Bay of Play which features rides, play areas, and places to meet their favorite Sesame Street characters.
Of course, the true stars of Sea World are the animals. Families will have a blast at a variety of animal encounters where they can feed dolphins, touch juvenile alligators, get in the wtaer with beluga whales, and watch sharks swim overhead.
Cool off at Aquatica
Don’t miss Aquatica, SeaWorld’s water park, which is located next door. It is a great place to cool off during a hot Texas day.
There are water slides, a lazy river, wave pool, and water playgrounds for all ages to enjoy. Favorites include Stingray Falls, a four-seat raft that rides down to an underwater grotto where you will encounter a large aquarium filled with stingrays and tropical fish.
Aquatica also has sting rays and visitors have the opportunity to get into the water with these harmless creatures and gently pet them.
Get in Touch with your Wild Side at the San Antonio Zoo
The San Antonio Zoo is home to 3500 animals representing 600 different species. They have special behind-the-scenes experiences where you can meet rhinos, hippos, and even an okapi! You can have breakfast with a kangaroo, and feed giraffes and flamingos.

An enclosed butterfly exhibit is open March through November, offering guests the opportunity to enjoy a variety of butterfly species up close. Enjoy a Picnic at Brackenridge Park
Brackenridge Park, a 343 acre park located near the San Antonio Zoo, is a great place to spend the afternoon. The San Antonio River winds through the park which features tree lined paths, playground, and a miniature train that takes visitors on a 3.5-mile loop around the park.
This park is an ideal place for a picnic or family photos on the scenic bridges. Brackenridge Park is also home to lovely Japanese Tea Gardens. The gardens feature shady walkways, attractive horticultural displays, and a 60-foot waterfall.
Visit San Antonio Missions National Historical Park
Pick up a Junior Ranger booklet and take your kids on a mission to score a coveted mission-themed Junior Ranger badge.
San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is actually made up of four different missions– Mission Concepcion, Mission Espada, Mission San Jose, and Mission San Juan Capistrano.
Free tours are offered and each has something unique such as Mission San Juan’s grist mill, Mission Espada’s dam and aqueduct, and Mission San Juan’s new demonstration farm.
Six Flags Fiesta Texas
My kids have never met a Six Flags they didn’t like and Six Flags Fiesta Texas ranks among the best for roller coaster enthusiasts visiting the state of Texas. Some of their favorite coasters include Iron Rattler, Superman Krypton Coaster, Kid Flash: Cosmic Coaster, and Batman: The Ride.
There are also several rides to keep younger kids entertained like a ferris wheel, train, carousel, mini coaster and tea cups. Seasonal events like Holidays in the Park, Scream Break, and Frightfest take place throughout the year as well.
Since it gets hot in Texas you will happy to know there is a water park adjacent to the amusement park- Hurricane Harbor San Antonio. This waterpark is filled with slides and new ones are being added every year. They have everything from family raft rides to speed slides to a lazy river and kiddie play area.
Take the Kids to the San Antonio Do-Seum
Escape the extreme temps and have fun at the San Antonio’s Do-Seum, a hands-on museum for younger kids. It is the perfect place to head when the Texas heat and humidity become too much to bare.
The air-conditioning is just the beginning of the fun. The museum is geared towards children ages 2 through 10 and features plenty of great hands-on exhibits on three different levels. Favorites include the HEB kid’s market, Power Ball Hall, and Science City.
Shop in El Mercado (Market Square)
San Antonio’s Hispanic heritage comes to the forefront at Market Square, a lively village filled with shops, dining, and entertainment. Market Square in downtown San Antonio is full of families enjoying the pleasant walk under fiesta decorated banners, past delicious restaurants and listening to the marimba play music guaranteed to get you moving.
Best of all, the stores are filled with such interesting things like singing bird whistles, singing frogs, mini guitars, dream catchers, slingshots, coonskin caps, and Mexican handicrafts so that even your most resistant little shoppers can be convinced to peruse the shops. Learn about Texas History at the Witte Museum & The Institute of Texan Cultures
Texas is one state that loves to celebrate itself. Luckily, it has a rich history and has plenty of culture worth celebrating. The Witte Museum is a Texas art and artifact museum and creative outdoor play space rolled into one.
Especially relevant to the culture and history of San Antonio are the People of the Pecos exhibit (pre-historic people of Texas) and the exhibits in the South Texas Heritage Center (Texas art, history of ranching, oil and gas exploration). The H-E-B science treehouse is a major highlight for young children. It is filled with four stories of interactive, educational play. The H-E-B Body Adventure exhibit has plenty of hands-on activities related to health and wellness.
School aged kids will get quite a bit out of a visit to the Institute of Texan Cultures which highlights the stories of various immigrant groups who settled in Texas, and important part of Texas history. Learning about why various groups settled in the state and how they lived is fascinating.
The heart of the Institute of Texan Cultures, Texans One and All, has exhibits for each of the twenty-six settlement groups that have come together to shape the culture of Texas. Most of the exhibits have some sort of hands-on aspect to them, often being dress up clothes for the kids. Don’t miss the exhibit on the indigenous people of Texas, the Tejanos.
Magik Theatre
We love to support children’s theater and Magik Theatre is a great one! The theater, which was founded in 1994, produces a diverse range of theatrical productions specifically designed for children. These productions include adaptations of classic children’s literature as well as original works.

Have a “Wild” Dining Experience at the Buckhorn Saloon
For an unusual dining experience, check out the Buckhorn Saloon which is home to multiple exhibit halls filled with taxidermy animals from all over the world, 520 species in all. The Buckhorn Saloon is also home to the Texas Ranger Museum, honoring the history and legacy of the iconic law enforcement agency, the Texas Rangers.

Government Canyon State Natural Area
Government Canyon State Natural Area covers over 12,000 acres on the northwest side of town and is best known for dinosaur tracks. These are the see the only known dinosaur footprints in the area. It is believed Acrocanthosaurus and Sauroposeidon dinosaurs left the tracks, nearly 110 million years ago.
There are 40 miles of trails within the park but the one to take to see the tracks is the Joe Johnston Route, which is close to six miles round trip. This is best as a cool season adventure because those Texas summers can be downright dangerous!
Natural Bridge Caverns
Natural Bridge Caverns have existed for thousands of years but it wasn’t until a bunch of college students discovered it in 1960 that the caverns became known in the area.
Today, they are a very popular place to go for tours. Tours are available at different levels, including the Discovery Tour which is the most popular tour with families and the Adventure Tours for those looking for a truly wild cave experience with older kids. This experience includes rappelling, crawling through narrow passages, and exploring undeveloped sections of the cave.
Back up on the surface, the fun continues! There is a huge ropes and zip course that has four levels of fun obstacles to conquer. There is even a tykes course for the kiddos that don’t meet the 42″ height requirement for the big course. There is also gem and fossil mining for the young geologist and paleontologists in your group.
Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch
Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is a drive-through safari experience that visitors to see a variety of exotic and native animals up close. The ranch is home to over 500 animals from over 40 different species such as giraffes, zebras, ostriches, rhinos, wildebeests, and antelopes.
Kids will love that you can purchase feed at the entrance and feed the animals from the safety of your car as you travel the six-mile length of the safari. A walkin safari past predators, a petting zoo, and the opportunity to feed giraffes are more highlights of this park.
You can also purchase an additional experience where you feed budgies in the park’s aviary and check out the prehistoric experience where lifelike models of huge dinosaurs await.
See the Largest Bat Colony in the World at Bracken Cave
The largest bat colony in the world lives in Bracken Cave on the outskirts of San Antonio near Natural Bridges. Watching millions of Mexican free-tailed bats fly out at sunset to feast on bugs is a sight you will never forget.
The bats spend the winter in Mexico, but come May, bat watching season at Bracken Cave is on! The cave is packed with bat pups, up to 400 per square foot, who learn to fly and be successful bats after around five weeks of age. This is when they begin to emerge from the cave and spend the summer honing their skills.
Bat watching season runs May through September and reservations are required to see the spectacle. . The bat flight schedule is generally posted on the Bat Conservation International page by March of each year, along with instrcutions for booking.

Take a Day Trip to New Braunfels
Sometimes a water park is just a water park, and then there is Schlitterbahn. This, family-friendly, family-owned mega water park resort is so big that you can take a shuttle from one side to the other!
It features everything from massive toddler play areas, a lazy river with waves, to a water roller coaster, and slides that dump you into the Guadalupe River. Yep. This is the water park you write home about.
Since things certainly do heat up during a Texas summer, tubing down the Guadalupe and Comal Rivers is another popular attraction in this town. The Comal is open to kids ages three and over and the Guadalupe is best for ages six and up. Everyone should know how to swim and always wear life jackets when tubing.

One of my favorite things about traveling is sampling the local cuisine. San Antonio is a Tex Mex haven and Los Barrios is one of the number one places to eat in town. The restaurant is both casual and welcoming to families and the chalupas, sopas, and enchiladas all keep locals coming back more.
Mi Terra Restaurant and Bakery is proof that great food can be found in touristy areas. Located in Market Square, this Mexican restaurant is famous for its vibrant decor, tasty food, and amazing postres (desserts).
If you are looking for some of the best bbq in San Antonio, head to Rudy’s. This place is as no frills as you can get. Big picnic tables are set up inside an old country store and everyone eats family style. The brisket is super tender and the creamed corn is the stuff of legends.
