The Learning Doesn't Stop.

There is never a dull moment here at Trekaroo headquarters. It seems that everyday, we are learning about something new, and reading about how best to do something. Andrew and Michael spent the first 3-4 months learning Ruby On Rails from our excellent consultants Internaut Design. Now that they are Ruby On Rails gurus, they’ve been learning Javascript, HTML and CSS. Brennan is also learning a lot about front-end tweaking, but he’s also had to learn the in and outs of mongrel, capistrano, vlad, modrails, and other open source funkiness, uh I mean goodness. LiLing is learning how to manage an agile development process, how to be part-time UI designer, part-time visual designer, how to write use cases, and conduct usability testing. We are all learning about Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Esther, is learning to be CEO, a lot about legal issues around running our business, she’s also been learning how to fund raise in a very difficult market. The list seems endless. Just as we feel comfortable with one thing, we have to learn something else.

This is what is so exciting about working at a startup. Forget about getting pigeon holed, everyone has to acquire new skills, do things that are out of element.

Fortunate for us, we are surrounded by wonderful advisors and wonderful friends who have shared their talents and expertise with us. In the matter of one week I’ve sat down to learn and work through our usability issues with 4 different friends who have been so generous with their time. Through their coaching, we’re learning to be effective in a wide variety of roles.

We’ve also learned from the collective wisdom of the people on the web who spend time writing about all manner of topics. This week, I learned about how to create intuitive categories on our site by conducting card sorting studies. (We are so grateful for the friends who support us by contributing to our user research studies and tests.). Applying ourselves in such a wide variety of ways can be overwhelming, but it’s also lots of fun.

If you like to organize things, join our card sorting study.
