Review of Shrunks Tuckaire Toddler Inflatable Travel Bed

The Shrunks Tuckaire Toddler Inflatable Travel Bed

With three kids, and one on the way, bed space is limited at hotels. We need that extra sleeping room provided by portable cribs. But, since my toddler graduated to a “big boy” bed at home, he sees portable cribs as a challenge and jumps in and out of them repeatedly instead of sleeping.  So I was excited to have another option to try with the Tuckaire Toddler Inflatable Bed.

Features I love about the Tuckaire Toddler Inflatable Bed:

  • Inflates/Deflates Quickly

The electric pump that comes with the bed is powerful and it takes only about 2 minutes to have both the inner mattress and outer bumper inflated. Likewise, when it’s time to take the bed down, the pump makes deflating just as quick. This was nice for us because we didn’t have a lot of extra space in our hotel room and it was quick and easy to put the bed away in the morning and blow it up again in the evening.

  • Sheets stay tucked in

I forgot to bring crib bedding because we usually just use the bedding that the hotel gives us.  I was able to tuck a twin size sheet around it the mattress and the sheet stayed in place all night.  A crib sheet would also fit the mattress nicely, and the bed would feel even more familiar to your child.

  • Child can get used to it; and it feels familiar

Last summer when we were traveling a lot, my baby started sleeping in a pack-and-play at home so he would be used to it on the road.  The advantage of this bed, is you can do that same thing.

  • Child doesn’t roll off sides

The bed has an inflated “rail” around the sides, unlike a regular air mattress. When camping, our kids usually end up off to the side of the air mattress by morning time. The Tuckaire Inflatable Toddler Bed has raised sides which keep your toddler on the mattress. (I have read since using this bed that the sides work better in the mattress is not fully inflated).

  • Travels easily

This inflatable toddler bed comes with its own travel bag and it is large enough to hold the deflated bed, pump, and even a crib sheet if you wanted to bring one along.  The bed doesn’t take up too much room in the car.  It would easily fit under a seat or wedged between luggage. The bed would take up quite a bit of room in a suitcase, though, which leads into the cons…

Cons to the Tuckaire Toddler Inflatable Bed:

  •       An extra thing to bring

Part of the luxury of staying at a hotel is that you don’t have to worry about beds or bedding. Most hotels will provide you with a crib free of charge. When you already have luggage for five people, it can be a pain to lug something else to your room, especially if it isn’t on wheels. If you have room in your suitcase, it would be easier to get it from point A to point B. But if you don’t have too far to go from your car, or not too much to carry, it wouldn’t be too big of a bother. I think the bed would be great for camping or staying at Grandma’s house.

  • Takes up a lot of space when inflated

The Tuckaire Toddler Inflatable Travel Bed has a crib size mattress, plus a bumper all the way around it. After filling the bed, it took up as much room as a roll-away bed, or about the same amount of space as a twin mattress would.

  • Electric pump

The included pump has to be plugged in, which is fine for a hotel. But if you take this bed camping, you would need to bring a battery powered pump. The electric pump’s cord is pretty short; so make sure you set up near an outlet.

  • No Top/Bottom Rails

The inflatable bumper has raised sides, but the top and bottom of the bumper are even with the mattress. In the morning, my toddler’s pillow and head were on the floor. (I have since read that this problem can be solved by putting the top of the bed against a wall).

If your child has outgrown a portable crib, and you need another travel bed option, the Tuckaire toddler inflatable beds is a great solution. The bed will feel familiar, and keep your child snug in his own bed, instead of with you in your bed.  I look forward to trying it out while camping this summer.

Disclosure: Although I received a complimentary Tuckaire Inflatable Toddler Bed from The Shrunks, my reviews are always my own opinions.
