Review of the Joovy Ultralight Caboose Tandem Stroller

“The Joovy Ultralight Caboose is a practical tandem stroller with well thought out features that are sure to help families enjoy getting around during their vacation or everyday life.” – Camille Grimshaw

Traveling anywhere with two small children can be a trying task, especially when a lot of walking is involved.  Keeping the kids contained and content in a crowded place can be a difficult and inconvenient task. Many vacation destinations attempt to make things easier by offering strollers at their facilities, usually at a high cost and with few features.

Our situation: Disneyland, two small children, and no option to pack something bulky. Our solution: The Joovy Ultralight Caboose.  The Ultralight Caboose ended up being the superhero of our vacation as both children were comfortable and happy while the helpful features of the stroller left us, the parents, happy too!

Pros:

  • Lightweight
  • Compact
  • Large removable sun protection
  • Ample storage basket
  • Soft handle storage for drinks and small items
  • Easy to steer
  • Adjustable front seat
  • Attachment for carseat
  • Removable snack tray

Cons:

  • Storage basket can be hard to access with children in stroller
  • Does not store compactly with the canopy attached (but the canopy can be removed)

When the Joovy Ultralight Caboose arrived my 1 year old and 3 year old were beyond excited.  I was able to quickly and easy assemble the stroller and once it was finished, I could not get my children out of it.  They both loved the Ultralight and enjoyed having their own spot.  The front seat is very roomy with a couple options for strapping the child in.  It is great that my toddler can climb in and out by herself and has the option to sit or stand.  The bench seat has a safety strap, but there is nothing to catch a child if they stumble backwards while standing.  I was very concerned about this, but we never had an issue with it, so perhaps it is not necessary.

Editor’s note: Joovy says there is no strap on the bench seat for safety reasons.  If a child riding on the bench seat were to fall backwards with a strap in place, their concern is that it could cause the entire stroller to tip over and injure the infant riding up front.  Joovy feels that ultimately, the stroller is safer without the strap.

During a previous Disneyland vacation, I was faced with the similar dilemma except with a 5 month old and a 2 year old.   I had another stroller that was very similar to this, but by the end of the vacation I had a list of things that I wished were different and a realization that if the baby were a bit older, the trip would have been miserable. The front seat in my old stroller was useless for any sort of nap, the sun protection was a joke, the storage was only accessible from the side, how many times could my toddler hit her head on the hard plastic storage on the handle,  and there where a million other strollers that looked just like mine.  Fortunately, the Joovey Ultra Light Caboose addressed my complaints perfectly.

While there are other tandem strollers can be acquired at a lower price, the features of this one are worth the small increase in price.   Since traveling to a sunny destination sun protection was a must, the oversized canopy with sun visor was wonderful.  The canopy does not fold up into the stroller, but rather folds up adding additional length when folded.

The other feature that I loved was the three reclining options.  Many tandem strollers feature two options, neither of which allow for a true reclining position.  The Joovy reclined enough to allow long, sun protected naps.  The footrest even positions up! It was just like a baby recliner on wheels.  While my younger child was sleeping my 3 year old did not have as much room to sit, but honestly I did not want my 3 year old that close to her brother while he was sleeping.

The storage under the stroller was nice too.  According to the manufacturer, there is a 5 pound limit on the storage, but I am sure that we more than doubled that without any issue.  The items are difficult to retrieve from the side, but the toddler seat slides making access from the back very easy.  This stroller comes in a variety of colors and ultimately I decided on the bright green color, thinking that it would stick out a bit in a sea of strollers, and it did.  We never lost our stroller and finding the person pushing it around was easy too.  I was worried that the lighter color would show dirt and look unpleasant after all the snacks it experienced on our trip, but so far it is still looking good.

In addition to being a great asset during our visit to Disneyland, the Joovy also was a trooper during our adventures through the airport.  I was very happy to find that I was able to easily steer it with only one hand, as the other was dragging luggage.  It traveled through the airport smoothly, entertained my children while waiting for the plane, and collapsed quickly at the gate.  I would like to note that while this stroller does collapse easily, make sure you collapse it a few times checking for safety latches.  This part gave my husband a bit of trouble as we got it through security.

Since our vacation I have stored this stroller in the back of my car for convenience. I have removed the canopy and stored it separately because when the stroller is folded with the canopy attached, I find it takes up alot more space. I also recently noted that part of the canopy is showing wear which was a bit disappointing to see so early on, but upon notifying Joovy a replacement was promptly sent.

Considering my experiences with the Joovy Ultralight Caboose during and after our vacation, it is the stroller that I would recommend to anyone looking for a practical tandem stroller with well thought out features that are sure to help families enjoy getting around during their vacation or everyday life.
