Kite Festivals Across the USA

Don’t you just love Daylight Savings?  The days are longer, leaving more time to get outside and enjoy the warm weather and the time change also seems to signify the official opening of kite season.   Why not celebrate those beautiful acrobatic stars of the sky by attending one of the many kite festivals across the United States?  Most of them are free and all are guaranteed to be fun time for anyone who enjoys the fresh air and a kite filled sky.

Once again, Trekaroo’s top list maker extraordinaire, Lydie, has put together a great list of kite festivals across the United States.  Here are a few of the highlights:

  • The Atlantic Coast Kite Festival takes place in Virgina Beach, VA, this year on April 30, 2011.  There are a variety of family friendly activities to participate in throughout the day but the highlight is the  “Best Kite Contest.”  Participants are required to build a kite, bring it to the festival. and then fly it for 5 minutes at a height of 100 feet.  Kites are judged on flight, structural design, craftsmanship, and visual appeal.

  • Mayor Daley’s Kids and Kites Festival take place in Chicago, IL, on May 7th this year in Lincoln Park.  This family focused event is all about getting kids running around outside. Free paper kites will be provided and fun activities such a face painting, balloon artists, and crafts will be available.

  • The San Francisco Family Day Kite Festival take place above the Marina Green on September 17th and 18th, 2011.  Festival-goers will have a chance to watch professional kite fliers or fly a kite of their own while the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay serve as a most picturesque backdrop.  There will be a multitude prizes given away for kites in categories such as funniest, biggest, smallest, and most unique.

Morro Bay’s Kite Festival (California) is April 30-May 1.

Food, arts and crafts vendors, professional kite pilots, kite wranglers, exhibitions by kiteboarders and a candy drop for the kids. There is no better way to spend a weekend with the family, so grab the kids for a parade and a day of kite flying fun. Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce (805) 772-4467.

This is a great kids event, right on the beach, and free!
