THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. CONGRATS TO ERIN COOK, RANDOM.ORG PICKED COMMENT #48 WHICH WAS YOURS!
Confession- I am a Gossip Girl addict. There is just something about the fictional world of Manhattan’s elite that draws me in week after week. Its a gloriously addicting combination of fashion, drama and New York City culture and I love every minute of it. This past summer, I had the pleasure of staying on the Upper East Side at the Affinia Gardens Hotel and I found myself constantly looking for Gossip Girl sites as I walked the neighborhood. Unfortunately, I had no idea where anything was and didn’t find Constance or St Judes! I wish I would have known about On Location Tours.
On Location Tours is a company specializing in bringing tourists into the world of New York tv and movies. Trekaroo’s own Liling Pang recently had the privilege of taking the New York Movies and TV Sites Tour with her seven year old and had a great time. During the 3.5 hour bus tour they went from location to location, watching movie clips featuring the very sites they were visiting. Rebecca, their guide, was a walking encyclopedia of information, making the entire experience that much more enjoyable. Liling recommends the tour for any movie buff and suggests that children be at least 7 due to the duration of the experience. You can read her entire review here.
In addition to the tour mentioned above, On Location Tours also features a Classic New York Movie Sites tour, Sopranos Sites tour, and a Gossip Girl Sites tour. We are excited to announce the company has offered a 20% discount on all mentioned tours to Trekaroo readers- simply use the code TREK20 when purchasing tickets.

When the producers of the 2-time Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning comedy invited our family to watch this spoof of Alfred Hitchcock’s murder mystery – 39 Steps, I wasn’t sure what to expect for our 7 year old. However, from the moment the lights dimmed and the stage broke into life, our 7 year old became progressively spellbound by the experience.
As an adult, I was absolutely thrilled by the brilliance with which a cast of 4 was able to play a 140 characters. This clever and absurd rendition of Alfred Hitchcock’s murder mystery was filled with unexpected interpretations and wildly hilarious moments. What I enjoyed most about the performance was being reminded that great theatrical performances don’t need extravagant sets, costumes or a 100 piece orchestra. 39 Steps is a performance where the power of suggestion and exaggeration tug your imagination out of the closet and transport you into a different reality. We thoroughly enjoyed this show filled with many laughs, mystery, suspense, and a touch of romance.
I was a little concerned that the story line of a murder mystery would be too much for a 7 year old. There are 2 shooting scenes where blanks are fired from a revolver that caused him to jump visibly, but all in all, the comical way in which these events unfolded on stage did not disturb him at all. In any case, I was delighted that he was able to appreciate the artistry with which the directors and actors commanded on this stage. Theatre is an art form that young people are slowly loosing the appreciation for as productions lean more and more on special effects to draw their audiences in. 39 Steps isn’t so. It’s artistically ingenious and I was delighted that our 7 year old had the opportunity to savor it.
It was with great sadness that I learned that 39 Steps just announced that their last performance will be Jan 16, 2011. Time is running out to watch this brilliant performance. I highly recommend that families with kids ages 9 and up try to catch the show before it’s final bow.
Here’s one of my favorite scenes from 39 steps.

Their high kicks are famous. The show is a bona fide holiday classic. For over 75 years, the Rockettes have been entertaining families with their annual Radio City Christmas Spectacular. For decades, only families who were in New York City had the privilege of attending the show, but these days, even those of us on the West Coast have an opportunity to see the show.
The Rockettes are currently in the midst of a national tour, bringing the Christmas Spectacular to 25 cities along the way. In between shows, the Rockettes are kept busy with promotional appearances and charity events. Last Friday, I met up with the Rockettes at Fire Station #11 in Anaheim, CA, where they were “kicking off’ the annual Spark of Love Holiday Toy Drive. For 18 years, Southern California firefighters have collected toys to help the less fortunate. The drive has been been incredibly successful, and 500,000 toys were collected last year!
After the kick off, I had the opportunity to talk to Rockette Vanessa Mc Mahan, and ask her a few questions about the Christmas Spectacular:
Trekaroo: What do families who attend the show have to look forward to?
Vanessa: The arena tour is the exact same tour that is in New York, but on a much larger scale. You have the lights, the costumes, everything is larger than life. We have an LED screen this year and its the third year we are touring with this company so we’re really excited to be bring this show to families across America.
Trekaroo: Do you have a favorite part of the show?
Vanessa: One of my favorite parts of the show is when Santa takes the kids on a journey to Santa’s workshop where all the ragdolls come to life. The Rockettes are dressed as ragdolls and Santa puts a spell on us and its nice to see the kids’ smiles when we come to life. Oh- and there is a special message that we spell out at the end of the show which is really fun.
Trekaroo: What is the minimum age you would recommend for children to view the show?
Vanessa: There is really no minimum or maximum age. Its good for all ages and all families. People might think their child isn’t going to sit through it but my little cousin went and he was only a year old. He was just fascinated the entire time he was watching the show.
Trekaroo: As a Rockette you have had the opportunity to travel around the country on tour. Do you have a favorite travel destination that you would like to recommend to families?
Vanessa: I really like California but I also like Portland, OR. Its beautiful, it has a wonderful atmosphere, there’s lots to do, plus there is fresh air and I really love that. I am from the Midwest so its pretty flat there. I like seeing the mountains and smelling the fresh air.
Trekaroo: Any advice for little girls with big dreams of becoming a Rockette one day?
Vanessa: Oh of course! I would say just to follow your dreams. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do anything. It actually took me four times of auditioning for the Rockettes to finally get it. So as long as you really want your dreams to come true and you have the tools, you just have to follow your heart.
The Radio City Christmas Spectacular will be at the Honda Center in Orange County December 6-7. Toys will be collected at Honda Center during each Rockettes performance so if your family gets a chance to attend, don’t forget to bring a toy!
The Steal: Get 20% off tickets to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular
Purchase tickets to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular tour online at ticketmaster and use the promo code: train to receive 20% off the price of tickets to the show!

Welcome to
One of our nation’s biggest Thanksgiving traditions takes place every year on the skyscraper lined streets of Manhattan. For 84 years, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has delighted both young and old with floats, marching bands, and those world famous balloons. For many of us, watching the parade has been a part of our Thanksgiving Day for as long as we can remember.
The parade first began as Christmas parade filled with employees of Macy’s and animals from the Central Park Zoo. The balloons made their first appearance three years later, and were released up into the air as a grand finale. Much to the surprise of organizers, the balloons burst above the Manhattan skyline, so the balloons were improved and the nest year they included address labels so that anyone who found them could turn the giant balloons back in to Macy’s for a prize. Due to rubber and helium shortages, the parade was silenced during World War II. 650lbs of rubber from the deflated balloons were donated to the war effort. The parade was televised nationally for the first time in 1947, starting a parade viewing tradition that has continued for generations.
If you are attending the massive celebration for the first time, you may have some questions on how to “do” the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade right. here are our tips on how to have a successful parade experience that will live on in the memories of your children forever.
- What is the 2010 parade route? This year’s parade begins at 77th street and Central Park West. It heads south down Central Park West until reaching Central Park South. From there, it heads east until reaching 7th Avenue where it will once again head south. Once the parade reaches 42nd Street, it will head east once again before heading south one final time on 6th Avenue. When the procession approaches 34th Street, it will head west until reaching Herald’s Square, home of the most famous Macy’s on the planet.
- How crowded will it be? Very crowded. The parade brings out the masses so be prepared to share the streets with 3.5 million other parader-goers. Make sure sure to keep a firm grip on little ones’ hands. With everyone looking up at the balloons, it only takes a second to lose sight of a tyke wandering off.
- Are there family friendly hotels along the route? Doubletree Times Square, Trump International Towers, Le Parker Meridien, and Marriott Marquis are among the Trekaroo member recommended hotels along the route. Those who have attended the parade agree that a parade view room on one of the lower levels of the hotel is worth the splurge.
- Can I watch the balloons being inflated? Yes you can and you should! The balloons are inflated 77th and 81st Streets between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue from 3-10PM the day prior to the event. There will still be crowds but your chances of getting up close to the balloons are much higher.
- What time should we arrive for the parade? The Macy’s official parade website says that people should start arriving at 7AM for a 9AM parade start. Your best bet is to try to arrive between 6 and 7 and DON”T LEAVE, or else you will lose your spot to someone else. Chairs are not recommended, but a thermos full of hot chocolate and plenty of warm clothes are.
- Where is the best place to watch the parade from the ground? According to Trekaroo user Smithfamily ” The best place for watching the whole parade is from Columbus Circle which is at the corner of Central Park South (CPS) and Central Park West (CPW). It’s a fabulous location with easy access to subways and lots of great sites. You’re also right on the doorstep of Central Park which is full of activities for your kids.”
